A Weekend in Columbia, South Cackalacky

Let’s first start off with my sweet boyfriend painting my toenails the night before we left to get my feet in mint condition for the trip. (I know… my toes are weird.) Waking up at 7 in the morning isn’t as hard as one would think when you’re waking up to go to the zoo. By 9 o clock, after J made sure I had my iced coffee and hash browns, we were on the road (I strongly believe road trips are half the fun). Around two and a half hours later we arrived at the zoo.

Another hour and a half later we make it through the entrance (traffic was terrible) and pick ourselves up a map. That’s when I realize this place was much bigger than I thought. We decided to start at the indoor reptile/amphibian/fish exhibit. Snakes are cool and everything but after the eleventh one we were both ready to move on and see something else. When we made it to the farm animal section of the zoo the smell was hot and heavy. We waited in line to milk the (fake) cow, but after being cut in front of by some five year olds a couple times we decided it wasn’t really worth it. Ready to move away from the smell, we made our way over to the flamingos, zebras, ostriches, and alligators.

We had an awesome experience with the giraffes. They were beautiful. After the giraffes, we stumbled upon the elephants and I was super excited because they’re my favorite. While I was taking pictures with the elephants, I turned around to admire them for a minute. That’s when I smelt it. The elephant in front of me began to wag it’s tail back and forth and something began to fall from the sky. It was poop. And it landed on my back…. granted, it wasn’t much at all, but an elephant actually POOPED on me, which I decided to take as a compliment (you wouldn’t know by the expression on my face) My favorite animal had pooped on me. (:

After being pooped on, we watched a gorilla being fed, made our way through the building where they housed endangered animals, and finally made it to the meerkats (another one of my favorites). They were definitely the cutest animals I had seen all day. After the meerkats, we found the baboons( j’s favorite), then we saw the lions. Unfortunately, the tigers were hiding that day.

When we had seen most of the animals we made our way into the forest part of the zoo. It was one of my favorite parts because well I just love nature.

After four hours of walking and enjoying all the zoo had to offer we were starving so of course we had to pull out Google. That’s when we found Pawleys Front Porch, they were actually featured on the Food Network.. It was in downtown Columbia and we were able to literally sit outside and eat on their front porch. The weather was perfect and it was possibly the best burger I’ve ever had. After food we visited Finlay Park which was situated right outside of downtown. With the city in the background and a pretty dope water sculpture it was a perfect way to wrap up our trip.
